top drive meaning

A device similar to a power swivel that is used in place of the rotary table on a drilling rig to turn the drill stem. Hung from the hook of the traveling block, a top drive also suspends the drill stem in the hole and includes power tongs. Modern top drives combine elevators, tongs, swivel and hook.
