ground-position indicator meaning

An instrument which continuously displays the dead-reckoning position of an aircraft

Abbreviation, GPI. A computer system that gives a continuous indication of an aircraft’s position in terms of heading, elapsed time, and speed, with respect to the surface. This provides a more useful indication of the aircraft position than an air-speed indicator because it is not affected by high-altitude winds.
