The type species of LYMPHOCRYPTOVIRUS,subfamily GAMMAHERPESVIRINAE,infecting B-cells in humans. It is thought to be the causative agent of INFECTIOUS MONONUCLEOSIS and is strongly associated with oral hairy leukoplakia (LEUKOPLAKIA,HAIRY),BURKITT LYMPHOMA,and other malignancies.
