blackbody radiation meaning

  "blackbody radiation" in a sentence
Noun: blackbody radiation
  1. The electromagnetic radiation that would be radiated from an ideal black body; the distribution of energy in the radiated spectrum of a black body depends only on temperature and is determined by Planck's radiation law
    - black-body radiation

Derived forms: blackbody radiations

Type of: electromagnetic radiation, electromagnetic wave, nonparticulate radiation

Encyclopedia: Blackbody radiation

[Electronics]
Electromagnetic radiation from a heated ideal BLACKBODY. This radiation is conceived as covering the entire ELECTROMAGNETIC FREQUENCY SPECTRUM. It can be expressed graphically as a characteristic curve with a peak at a wavelength that depends on the absolute temperature of the object. As the absolute temperature increases, the peak occurs at progressively shorter wavelengths (higher frequencies). This enables radio astronomers to get a reasonably good idea of the temperatures of distant celestial objects, such as planets.

[Thermodynamics]
"The emission of radiant energy which would take place from a blackbody at a fixed temperature, it takes place at a rate expressed by the Stefan-Boltzmann law, with a spectral energy distribution described by Planck's equation."
