The only genus in the family ARENAVIRIDAE. It contains two groups ARENAVIRUSES,OLD WORLD and ARENAVIRUSES,NEW WORLD,which are distinguished by antigenic relationships and geographic distribution. n : any of a group of viruses containing a single strand of RNA, having a grainy appearance due to the presence of ribosomes in the virion, and including the Machupo virus and the causative agents of lymphocytic choriomeningitis and Lassa fever
